New Technology Improves Quality Control Process for Farmers

New Technology Improves Quality Control Process for Farmers

Brendon Maxwell and the team at Utopian Coffee Co made a donation of portable moisture meters for our farmers at De la Gente just before the harvest season started.  These meters allow us to get one step closer to providing the best cup of coffee possible! Quality control is an integral piece of the specialty coffee business as well as key elements to De la Gente’s cooperative assistance programs.  DLG focuses on ensuring that our partner cooperatives can produce coffee that meets specialty standards so that they can access higher-paying markets through DLG.

Often our cooperatives send samples ahead of time to ensure their product meets specialty coffee standards. While we use the lab at ANACAFE, the national coffee association, to test samples, these new moisture meters allow us to generate immediate moisture readings at no extra cost.  This feedback will contribute to an improvement in cup quality as well as milling outcomes and is part of De la Gente’s work providing farmers with continuing education on best practices in coffee agriculture and processing techniques.

This is a great example of collaboration with a roaster dedicated not just to excellence in sourcing but also to giving back to producers. We are grateful that Utopian shares these values with De la Gente. We believe that empowering producers with the tools and knowledge of best practices in coffee agriculture and processing is key to economic success.  We look forward to seeing the effect on the quality of this year’s coffee, and our future harvests. Thanks Utopian for your continued support!
