2019 De la Gente Origin Trip Itinerary
Day 1: ARRIVAL AND ORIENTATION
Welcome! You’ll meet your fellow coffee lovers in Antigua and we’ll head to the guest house in San Miguel Escobar for orientation and dive into learning about the actors in the coffee industry with the Coffee Chain Game followed by a dinner with a member of the cooperative.
Day 2: SEED TO CUP
You'll start your day with a beautiful hike up the volcano to the coffee fields. The morning will be spent learning about the agricultural aspects of growing and processing coffee from seed to cup. You're sure to gain a newfound appreciation for a fresh cup of coffee! We'll finish the morning in the farmer's home with a well-deserved lunch. Then you’ll have a chance to cup a variety of De la Gente coffees. After that we'll take a chicken bus into Antigua to brave the market to get ingredients for tonight’s dinner.
Day 3: FULL HARVEST
You’ll make your way back up the volcano for more harvesting and incredible views. Enjoy lunch in the fields and return to town in the afternoon to wet process the fruit you’ve harvested. You will end a day in the life of a coffee farmer with a home-cooked dinner with your host’s family.
Day 4: COFFEE PROCESSING
Spend the morning processing coffee at the dry mill and learn the delicate task of sorting beans by hand. Then hear from Andy, Executive Director of De la Gente, about the history of coffee in Guatemala over lunch. The afternoon will be filled with smells of roast coffee as you work in the roaster to help with local sales. The rest of the day is yours to explore!
Day 5: GUATEMALA CITY
After breakfast you will head to the City. Our first stop will be Anacafé, the National Coffee Association of Guatemala. Next, you will get another perspective on the Guatemalan coffee industry while visiting Cuatro Grados Norte, a modern district full of vibrant specialty cafés. After lunch you will dwell on the history of Guatemala in Casa de la Memoria. Dinner will wait for you at a farmer’s house.
Day 6: COOK & GO
Now it’s your turn to be the chef. Learn how to prepare pepian, the national dish of Guatemala, with one of the families. After a full belly, you’ll depart for Lake Atitlán to explore Panajachel on your own in the evening.
Day 7: LAKE ATITLÀN
Early morning you will take a boat to San Lucas Tolimán, home to Ija’tz cooperative. First, you will take in some more lake views during a hike with a local guide and then return for lunch prepared by the female members of the co-op who run locally famous catering business. In the afternoon you will be guided through the collective coffee processing space by the farmers. You will return to Antigua for a farewell dinner.
DAY 8: DEPART
Enjoy one last breakfast at the guest house before moving on to your own adventures!
