97% of coffee producers in Guatemala are small-scale farmers, but they produce less than half of the country's coffee and receive the lowest prices in the coffee chain.

When we ask small coffee producers in Guatemala what they want the most, they don’t mention aid or charity. They want opportunities - access to education and financing to build businesses - so they can be self-sufficient and provide for their families. They are intelligent, driven, and have the desire to succeed, but lack the specific training, education, resources, and access to markets to sell their products.

Your donation strengthens De La Gente’s mission, ensuring we can continue building partnerships with cooperatives, supporting farmer training, improving coffee quality, and creating access to markets.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit in the U.S., we will confirm receipt of all donations whether made online or offline.

Previous Projects Funded by Donations

Our work is propelled by your shared belief in our mission and the vision of the small scale producers with whom we work to make coffee production a sustainable and dignified livelihood.

Each of our projects have been planned and implemented in conjunction with our partner cooperatives to ensure that every contribution is used for the benefit of the coffee-producing communities.

Coffee Processing Training for the Women Caficultora Network

In 2024, we launched a new initiative to support women coffee growers by investing in training and providing guidance to help them process their coffee. This pilot program took place in the community of San Miguel Escobar with six women participants. For four of them, it was their first experience processing coffee. With the sponsorship of DLG, one of the women with vast experience in coffee production, provided training and support to the others to ensure high-quality results.

The outcome was a success, all the participants’ coffees scored above 80 points, qualifying as Specialty Coffee. Our vision is to scale this initiative, empowering this first cohort of women to train a second group and continue expanding the impact across more coffee-growing communities.

Community wet-mill for The Union of Small-scale Coffee Producers

In the mountains of Huehuetenango, our partner cooperative UPC received a new electric depulper for the coffee producers in the Santo Domingo community. Previously, farmers used a manual depulper that processed only 100 pounds of coffee per hour, a labor-intensive and time-consuming task. During the last harvest, they were able to use the new electric depulper, reducing the time to process 100 pounds of coffee to less than five minutes. This upgrade significantly reduced physical strain and saved time, allowing farmers to focus on other critical parts of the production process.

Moisture Meters for Members of la Suiza Cooperative

Members of La Suiza Cooperative in the San Marcos region received a donation of four moisture meters. This essential tool helps determine when green coffee beans have reached the optimal moisture level, crucial for proper drying and maintaining high coffee quality. The meters were distributed among different households, allowing members who live farther apart to increase efficiency and consistency during the drying stage.
