Antigua Day Trip
Culture, Coffee, and Cuisine. Tasting Authentic Guatemalan Flavors
Our Antigua day trip is conducted by coffee-producing families in the community of San Miguel Escobar. It celebrates the heart of Guatemala and will allow you to immerse and connect with local communities. Start by learning to cook Guatemala’s traditional dishes, Pepián and mole the traditional way with a local family. After cooking and tasting this Guatemalan delicacies, explore the fields of a coffee farm, learn the process behind coffee, have meaningful conversations with the producers, and end the day with a freshly roasted and ground cup of coffee at their home.
*Pepián can be prepared gluten-free and/or vegetarian/vegan

Pepián is Guatemala's national dish (typically prepared for special occasions such as holidays, weddings, birthdays, etc.) made from roasted tomatoes, a variety of dried chilis, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, and onion to create a flavorful spiced and nutty sauce that includes meat or protein and an assortment of vegetables served over rice.
Mole is a traditional dessert made with similar dried chilis, seeds, and roasted tomatoes as Pepián, but instead of meat and vegetables, it is prepared with ripe fried plantains, chocolate, and cinnamon. It is a sweet, thick, chocolatey sauce with a hint of spice that complements the sweetness of the plantains.

The Pepian Cooking Class is conducted in homes in a traditional, rural Guatemalan kitchen. You will be cooking with wood, rather than gas or electric stoves. There is a chimney to keep the kitchen smoke-free, but there is the possibility of a falling ember (hence why we suggest closed toed shoes!) and you may add some kindling or a log to the fire.
We provide training with all of the pepián instructors regarding cooking and hygiene, so they take great care of their guests. But even so, this is not an industrial kitchen, rather a Guatemalan kitchen.
*Let us know if you’re vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free
During your Coffee Tour, you can expect to walk approximately 5 kilometers (3.2 miles) as we make our way through the fields and back to the producer's home in town. Parts of the walk include uneven terrain, loose dirt paths and trails, and while minimal overall elevation gain, some parts of the walk are steep. If you foresee having any difficulty participating in this kind of activity, we can make the necessary adjustments so that you have the most enjoyable experience possible. Just please be sure to add those notes during your checkout process.
